The Kentucky Derby is the most important moment in the lives of many of its runners, but whether they finish first or last, it goes on after they cross the wire.

Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills takes a look at where every member of the 19-horse field is today, eight years after the race. Some have gone on to prominent stud careers, some have ended up standing at stud overseas, some have gone on to succeed in fields outside of the racing and breeding industry, while others left us too soon.

Included in the 2016 Kentucky Derby field is the eventual winners of all three Triple Crown races, the champion 2-year-old male of the previous year, two eventual Breeders' Cup winners, two future Eclipse Award winners, and a member of the 2024 class of inductees for horse racing's Hall of Fame.

After their careers, horses in the field have stood domestically in Kentucky, New York, California, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Wyoming, and they've stood internationally in Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela.

Two members of the field competed in the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover, and several have gone on to post-racing careers that didn't involve the breeding shed.
